on-exercise activity thermogenesis (NEAT). What the heck does this mean anyway? Well I will tell you:

*Non-exercise activity thermogenesis (NEAT) is the energy expended for everything we do that is not sleeping, or sports-like exercise. Simple daily activity that includes, walking, gardening, golf, housework, etc. This can all have an impact on your cumulative expenditure and metabolic rate. NEAT can be critical in how we maintain a healthy body weight. As a culture we have squashed our NEAT with desk jobs, therefore NEAT is culturally even more important than ever before. How do I get more NEAT in my life? Try my top 10 tips to add more NEAT to your day:

1. Get a pedometer and walk 10,000 steps per day. 2.Hold your meetings outdoors and walk instead of coffee or lunch meetings. 3. Stand whenever possible. Stand when you talk on the phone or even invest in a standing desk. 4. Do housework vigorously. Don't sit and fold laundry STAND up! Vacuum with purpose and try to break a sweat. 5. Take the stairs as much as possible. 6. Drink lots of water, this will force you to get up more throughout your work day to use the restroom. 7. If you must snack choose raw veggies. You expend more energy breaking down fibrous vegetables. 8. Drink some caffeine. This increases your metabolic rate 9. Isometrically contract different muscles while sitting at your desk. 10. Every time you are in traffic or at a stop light engage your core and hold it for the duration of the light. See how long you can keep it engaged.

Take away. NEAT may not help you lose mass amounts of weight but it CAN help you maintain your body weight and prevent those pesky pounds from sneaking up on us as we age.
